Read on to learn about Cricut’s Access Plans and if you are required to use cartridges with your Cricut Explore Air 2.
I remember when I first heard about Cricut, cartridges were required. I really liked what it could do, but I wasn’t so crazy about having to find and buy cartridges for images I needed. Fast forward to the Cricut Explore Air 2 that I use all the time. A lot of people still ask, “Will I be required to use cartridges with the Cricut?” And the answer is no! (But if you still have some cartridges from older models, you can link them to your Design Space and still use them. There is a little slot on the Cricut Explore Air 2 where you can insert the cartridge. see the picture below.)
Instead of cartridges, Cricut now offers Cricut Access. There are three different plans available. You can click on any of the plans below to purchase.

I hope that helps answer your questions about the Cricut Access plans. If you have any other questions let me know in the comments below.
I got a Cricut Explore Air 2 from Santa 😊 and it’s still in the box. I’m a T total virgin and I have zero experience with using any kind of programs on a computer. I’ve been trying to read everything I can, watching videos and in Facebook groups. I feel like my head is about to explode and I’m on the verge of returning my machine to the North Pole. I’m so intimidated by it. Ok, enough of my rant. My question is do I HAVE to subscribe to Cricut Access or can I make individual purchases, like certain fonts? Thanks!
Hi! Don’t fret and return it to the North Pole just yet! It’s always a little intimidating at first, but once you start and get the hang of it you will love it. Design Space is very user friendly and quick to learn.
First of all, no you do not need to buy Cricut Access. You create a Design Space login/password and use Design Space for free. You can upload your own images to cut (try googling free SVGs) and you can also use your own fonts from the computer. (A lot of people love to get free fonts from dafont.com.) You can also buy images and fonts individually from Design Space so that’s great too. A lot of designs can be created using simple shapes and the different tools available in Design Space. I wrote about those tools here- http://inspiration.cricut.com/design-space-tips-using-the-slice-weld-attach-group-tools/ Another great resource is learn.cricut.com There are lots of helpful video tutorials.
Your machine should come with a free 2 week trial of Cricut Access when you set it up. Use this time to play around with it and insert and cut out some different images.
I hope that helps! Let me know how it goes and if you have other questions. 🙂
If I purchase a monthly subscription (the ones that have images as well as fonts), do I get to “keep” those images that I uploaded? Didn’t know if they’re usage time expires. Thanks!
Hi Laurie, once your Cricut Access subscription ends your image will have a cost associated with it to cut it out. However, if you purchase that image separately then its yours to keep forever. The same applies to fonts. You can upload your own images with the upload tool, and those would be ones you keep. Hope that helps!
If I get my daughter a cricut can she use my cricut acess or do I have to buy a seprate one?
Hi Sarah! I’m not sure about that. I would suggest contacting Cricut chat and asking them.
I bought the year pan in Dec hoping it will help me use the circut more. have not had time to try because of the holidays. now not sure how to get to my account. can you help
Hi! If you contact Cricut Customer Service, they should be able to help you with your account. I hope you enjoy using it once you start!
I am having trouble when I use faux leather with different backings to stay on my mats after the first shape is cut if it cuts twice it pulls it up and messes it up. I tape it down to try to keep it down but what is a better way to do it?
Are you putting the faux leather design side down? I’ve heard some people do that rather than put the back on the mat.
I use an iPad and a laptop can I use both with one account
