It’s no secret I love using my Cricut to make paper flowers (You can see some of my other posts on paper flowers HERE and HERE.) One of the hardest parts for me is deciding what colors to use for my flowers. When I saw all the varieties of neutral cardstock at my local JOANN store, I knew I wanted to make a farmhouse inspired sign. I picked up all the paper and the wood sign at my store. They even have the beautiful purple Cricut Wisteria right now that is exclusive to JOANN stores.
Supplies for Paper Flower Farmhouse Sign:
Cricut Maker Machine
Cricut Stencil Vinyl
Cricut Cutting Mat Light Grip
Cricut Paper Crafting Tool Set
Cricut Tool Set
Wood Sign
Minwax Wood Stain in Honey
Rag
Cardstock in various neutral shades
White DecoArt paint
Foam Brush
Hot Gluegun & Gluesticks
Neutral felt pom poms for flower centers
Instructions:
This first step is an optional one. I wanted my sign to have a darker frame, so I used Minwax stain in the color “Honey” and a rag to stain the edges of my sign.
Next, if you want to make this same sign, open my file in Cricut Design Space—-> HERE. On your Design Screen, hide everything in the Layers panel on the right except for the bucket. You are going to cut this layer out first.
Click on Make It. Select “Stencil Vinyl” from the materials list. Place your stencil vinyl on your mat, load it into your machine and cut out your stencil.
Weed out the excess material from your stencil and carefully align it on your sign. Use your weeding tools to place the inside parts of the letters. I also use my Cricut scraper tool to press my stencil on, making sure no paint will leak underneath. Carefully paint your sign using your foam brush and white paint. Instead of brushing the first layer of paint across the stencil, dab it on with an up and down motion. This will prevent the paint from leaking underneath. Once I have dabbed my paint and let it dry a little bit, I brush across to smooth it. When your paint has dried, carefully remove your stencil. Now you have your bucket for your flowers!
Next, you will cut out your paper flowers. In the design screen, unhide the flower petals layers in the right hand panel. (Hide your bucket layer again as you already cut this out.) Click on Make It. You will need 6 of each petal, so click on 6 copies. Select “Cardstock” from the materials list. Place your cardstock on your mat, and cut out your flowers. Now, return to your design screen and unhide the rolled flowers and cut them out. I used 3 different neutral shades for my flowers.
You will end up with beautifully cut paper petals. Now it’s time to assemble!
Rolled flowers are very easy using the Cricut quilling tool. Simply place the end in the slit of the tool and roll your flower. Use your hot glue to secure it to the tab at the end. I like to let my flowers slightly unroll so they aren’t as tight.
For your other flowers, carefully cross over the bottom of the petals at the slit and use your hot glue to secure it. The larger petals you will cross over less so that they are more flat. Each smaller petal you will cross over more and glue so they stand up more.
Use some scrap paper to cut out a round base for your flower about 3 inches. Starting with your largest petal, glue them in a circle, continuing towards the center with your small petals. I used some felt pom poms for the center of my flowers, but you can also search “flower center” in Design Space to cut out your own.
Arrange your flowers on your sign and use the hot glue to secure them. Now your sign is ready to put on display.
If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below!
Where did you find the frame with the plain metal back?
Hi Tammy! I got it from my local JOANN store.
Love this!! What fonts did you use? The cut file didn’t include any text.
Hi Kim! I purchased the fonts from thehungryjpeg, so I couldn’t share them with the file, unfortunately. The fresh cut words were the font “Amy” and the flowers is the font “Girlfriend”
Thanks for asking Kim!! This Kim was coming to ask the same question.
Hey Jenny! I love this! I’m new to the Silhouette world. Is there any way you can give me for measurements? Thank you so much!
Hi Sienna! What measurements are you looking for? The completed sign? Or the size of the flowers?
Hie Jenny… Do i want to know the size of flowers?
I’m confused over creation of the bucket. It is grey. How did you make it? Is it made from multi-toned cardstock? The words are white, so that’s only what was painted with stencil, right?
Hi Doris! I used a metal sign so that’s what shows through. I stenciled everything except the bucket with white paint.
Hi Jenny! I don’t see this in the post so I hope I’m not asking information you already posted. Do you remember the size of the sign you used? I’d prefer not to have to figure out sizing – I”m new! TYIA and for all your great tutorials!
Hi Christine! The sign is 12″X12″ I actually saw them back in store at Joann this past week in the wood craft section.
How do I add the text to the stencil? I have used my own fonts but I am still figuring out the weld/attach options so that the text will cut out of the bucket image.
Hi Jessica! You would just add the text you want and then you can attach it to the bucket. It will cut out from the bucket where you have attached it. Or you can select just the bucket and the text (2 layers) and click slice and it will slice out the text. Then you can delete the extra layers. Hope that helps!
I love this so much! I do have a question though. It’s asking me to create an acct when clicking the link to get the cut file. Is there a way to bypass that, or do I need to create an a acct?
I think you have to create an account, but it’s free to do.
How do we find the frame with the metal ??? I tried Joann’s but nothing. ☹️
I have only been able to find them in store, and not online. I did find an 8X8 sign here- https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=m9c8GaQaI2U&mid=43312&murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.joann.com%2Funfinished-8×8-framed-metal%252Fwood%2F16250722.html but not a 12X12. Here is a link to the same brand of sign I used, Simply Spring, in a different dimension. Perhaps you could call your store and see if they could get it in the 12X12 size? https://click.linksynergy.com/deeplink?id=m9c8GaQaI2U&mid=43312&murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.joann.com%2Fsimply-spring-16.5×11-wood-frame-with-metal-sign%2F16421455.html
