Okay, I’ll admit it. I LOVE Halloween. Dressing up is my favorite! I love making my own unique costumes. When I first started dating my husband, I painted a huge Mona Lisa and made him be Leonardo da Vinci. I wish I had a better picture but it was years ago and all I have is this grainy old one! We also went as sushi rolls one year (hard to move around in those costumes!) And one of my favorite costumes, homemade skeletons. I was 38 weeks pregnant in this picture! When I had my kids, I added them to the fun and we did family costumes. One year we were all characters from Toy Story because my little guy LOVED Toy Story and the next we were all different bugs with my husband being a pest control person. See those words and image on my husband’s shirt? And the felt on my butterfly wings? I’ve always just hand-cut out pieces of my costumes in the past, but I was so excited to use my Cricut Maker to cut out the pieces for me! It made it so much faster and easier. Like seriously, sometimes making costumes took a LOT longer than I thought it would. I love the Maker and how many different kinds of materials it can cut. I used my rotary blade to cut out the felt taco toppings and the fine tip blade to cut out iron-on for the shirt.

Design Space files: HERE and HERE
Instructions for Sauce Costume:
Open the Design Space file for the hot sauce costume HERE. Measure you shirt and resize as necessary to fit your shirt. Select Make It, and select Mirror Image. Apply your iron-on to your StandardGrip mat liner side down. Make sure your fine-tip blade is loaded in the machine and cut out the design. Weed the design and prepare your shirt for application. Check out the EasyPress temperature settings HERE. My shirt was a Cotton/Polyster blend so the temperature was 315 for 30 seconds, with a 5 second pre-heat and 15 seconds on the back of the shirt. Make sure to peel off the liner while it’s warm. Now your hot sauce costume is ready!
Instructions for DIY Taco costume:
Open the Design Space file for the taco toppings HERE. Select “Make It”. Carefully apply your felt to your FabricGrip Mat.
Note: I rearranged the cheese pieces to one mat by clicking on the three dots in the corner of the image I want to move and selecting move to another mat. I like to cut felt with the rotary blade, so I choose the Felt, Acrylic Fabric setting. The regular felt material setting will prompt you to use the fine tip blade. I think the felt gets a cleaner cut with the rotary blade so I choose this setting instead. Cut out all of your felt pieces. Measure the person who will be wearing the costume. I needed a 12 inch shell to fit my daughter so I marked 12 inches on the foam board. I attached a pencil with a little piece of string so I could draw a half circle. You can also just free hand draw one. Using your Cricut TrueControl Knife on your self-healing mat, carefully cut out the half circle from each piece of foam board. You will also need to measure where the person’s arms will be so you can cut those out too. Lay out your yard of fabric folded in half to add extra thickness. Place the two pieces of foam on either side. I needed 12 inches in between each piece. Cut around the foam board, leaving a few inches of fabric around each side. Use the hot glue gun to glue around the edges, making sure to secure both pieces of the fabric. After you have glued the edges down, lay out your pieces of cheese, lettuce and tomatoes so you can make sure to cover around your taco. Glue these on too. Now you are done! Enjoy your homemade taco and mild sauce Halloween costumes! If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below.

Jenny-
Is there a file or pattern for the masks your children are wearing? Love these costumes and am hoping to recreate them for Halloween this year! 🙂
Sorry I don’t have a file for the masks 🙁
